Preparation

Readings:

  • #6-Accounts of the Muslim Conquest
  • #9-Christian Resistance in the North
  • #14B-Ibn Hayyan, “Muqtabis”

Questions for “Live” Discussion

  1. Compare the three accounts of the Muslim conquest (document #6). Two are from Arabic sources, one from a Christian source. One is written in the 8th century, one in the 9th century, and one in the 10th century. How are they similar/different to one another? What might account for those differences? How can they help us get a fuller picture of the events of the conquest?
  2. What can we learn about Abd Al-Rahman III’s raids and peace settlements with Christians in Document #14b? Can we ascertain what kind of policy he might have toward the Christian kingdoms?
  3. The Chronicle of Alfonso III (document #9) describes the story of Pelayo, defending the Christians against Muslim invasions in the early 8th century. But this chronicle comes from more than 100 years later. Why might the kings of the late 9th century want to create such a legend? What purpose might it serve for them?

Questions for “On Demand” Discussion will be posted in your groups on the chatboard.
