Citations:

  • Please use the citation style for your major. So if you’re a history major, please use Chicago! If you’re major is in any other discipline, use that citation style.
  • Citations are needed for the short explanatory essay that accompanies your artistic project.

General Guidelines

  • You can work in the mediums of painting, sculpture, drawing, collage or a combination.
  • Submit a 1000-1250 word essay with your artistic representation (see below for details).
  • Include a bibliography (formatted according to the style of your major).

How you develop and construct your visual representation is up to you. It can be as abstract (or not) as you want. The key is the essay that accompanies your piece and explains its intention to your audience.

Medieval Spanish History and Popular Imagination Artistic Representation

Choose a scene or character(s) from The Lions of al-Rassan and create an artistic representation of it/them, reflecting on the relationship between this aspect of the novel and the historical evidence that relates to it. Alternatively, you can choose to interpret particular themes from the novel in an artistic format, again in light of historical evidence.

You can choose from the mediums of painting, sculpture, drawing, collage, or a mixture. Your piece must reflect BOTH medieval Spanish history, drawing on historical evidence from primary and secondary sources, and Kay’s representation of it in this novel.

You must also write a 3-4 page essay explaining your piece. This essay must cover:

  • Why you chose this specific medium.
  • Provide an overview of your scene/character/theme and why you chose it.
  • Explain what each section of your piece represents and how it relates to your topic.
  • Discuss how the primary and secondary sources you read influenced your representation.

Medieval Spanish History Topic

For this project, create an artistic representation related to any topic on medieval Spanish history. Your representation should be based on your analysis of evidence from primary and secondary sources.

You must also write a 3-4 page essay explaining your piece. This essay must cover:

  • Why you chose this specific medium.
  • Provide an overview of your topic and why you chose it.
  • Explain what each section of your piece represents and how it relates to your topic.
  • Discuss how the primary and secondary sources you read influenced your representation.
